Kate Hawkins is an artist based in London. She is also Creative Director of CommonRoom, an artists’ interiors company that she founded in 2014 after completing her PhD. Trained in Fine Art, Kate has turned her hand to many things in recent years. This website collates her various creative interests in one place.

Kate’s philosophy is shaped by her faith in creativity and how through making and doing we can all find agency. She would like her paintings and drawings to act, to transform something, as opposed to just describe it. As with the ideas of accessibility that underpin the business, her fine art practice also comes from a desire to explore connection.

She is interested in what happens in the seams between different disciplines and works with hybrids and combinations of mediums and materials which interact and overlap. For her paintings she often uses base cloths with pre-existing utilities, that shift in meaning and value as paint is applied. Her subject matter is varied but meaning is consistently bound to the material of making.
